New York City – VNU Business Media and Burrill & Company have joined forces to build a global life sciences media company which will be called Burrill Life Sciences Media Group LLC, announced Robert Krakoff, president and CEO of VNU Business Media, and Steve Burrill, CEO of Burrill & Company on January 15. In doing so, VNU adds another market sector to its existing portfolio of six market-focused groups of Marketing; Retail; Film; Music; Marketing Services & Travel; and Residential & Commercial Building Design.
Krakoff told Trade Show Executive that “Life sciences is an industry that is global in scope and one of the fastest-growing segments of the business media marketplace.” Other research confirms the above-average performance of this and related sectors. According to a 2006 survey by Healthcare Convention & Exhibitors Association and Pri-Med, professional attendance at healthcare industry conventions climbed 13.8% over the past five years and the number of exhibitors grew 15.7%. The study also found that exhibits are the top source of information about new healthcare-related technology. The CEIR Index, an annual report of exhibition performance compiled by the Center for Exhibition Industry Research, also discovered above-average growth in the health care sector. The CEIR Index found that attendance at health care shows grew 3.4% in 2005 over 2004 (For more details, go to http://www.tradeshowexecutive.com/news_online_main.asp?id=298)
Krakoff called the venture the first step in developing the highest quality portfolio of events, conferences, publications, newsletters and industry reports in the life sciences sector. “We anticipate that our new undertaking will, over time, play the same role in the life sciences industry as The Hollywood Reporter does in film and Billboard in music,” he said. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The Life Sciences Media Group of Burrill & Company stages a series of executive-level conferences worldwide, including the Stem Cell Meeting, Personalized Medicine Meeting and the Biotech Meeting at Laguna Niguel, an exclusive event for biotech CEOs now in its 20th year. Burrill’s flagship publication is its annual State of the Industry Report, which is the Bible for the biotech industry, providing insights, intelligence and information
