SMG’s Thom Connors Named GM of New Irving Convention Center

HIL ANDERSON, SENIOR EDITOR

Irving, TX – Thom Connors, senior regional vice president of SMG Latin America, was named general manager of the Irving Convention Center at Los Colinas (ICC) in suburban Dallas, effective October 5.

Connors, who had been based in Puerto Rico, will remain in charge of SMG’s Latin America operations.

Referring to the ICC project, Maura Gast, executive director of the Irving Convention and Visitors Bureau said, “Thom has been part of the vision for this project from its first phases, nearly ten years ago.”

The new SMG-managed facility will open for business next year. It offers a 50,000 square-foot, column-free exhibition hall, a 20,000 square-foot ballroom and 20 breakout rooms.

“The ICC will be a prototype for future facilities in terms of scale, flexibility, design and internal service capability. It is an exciting addition to the competitive landscape and will be a unique product in the marketplace,” Connors said.

Connors, a long-time industry veteran, joined SMG in 1982. In his most recent position, Connors was responsible for starting up SMG’s Latin American division, which now includes facilities in Puerto Rico, Mexico and Chile, as well as catering and concessions operations in PR.

Prior to that, Connors was senior vice president of SMG’s Convention Center Division, following assignments as senior executive regional vice president and director of development for SMG Europe. He was also previously general manager of the Miami Beach Convention Center.
