San Mateo Renovates, Renames Expo Center

SANDI CAIN, NEWS EDITOR

San Mateo, CA – The San Mateo County Expo Center in December completed a $3 million renovation and was renamed the San Mateo County Event Center of the San Francisco Peninsula.

The facility, which dates to the 1930s, most recently added teleconferencing capability, a new riser seating system geared to concerts and sporting events, and landscape improvements. A new logo completed the makeover.

The 48-acre Event Center has seven buildings with a total of 197,460 square feet of exhibit space. The largest building is 104,900 square feet.

The Event Center aims to attract new business while maintaining the traditional trade and consumer shows that currently make up 72% of the center’s business. Yearly events include the Peninsula Home & Garden Show and the International Sportsman. New this year is the Log Cabin Expo.

Sales manager Erin Daughenbaugh said the center is close to signing corporate bookings with a major Internet/computer company and a pharmaceutical company. The first event at the renovated facility was the Yahoo! holiday party.

San Mateo also is home to the 300,000-square-foot Cow Palace, the South San Francisco Conference Center and the Hiller Aviation Museum. It is located between San Francisco International Airport and downtown.
