London, England – Erik Engstrom was named CEO of Reed Elsevier following the resignation of Ian Smith. Reed Elsevier is the parent company of Reed Exhibitions.  Chairman Anthony Habgood noted, “Ian has had the difficult task of leading Reed Elsevier during unprecedented turbulent economic times.”

Engstrom had been CEO of Elsevier for the past five years. He joined the company after serving as general partner of General Atlantic Partners, leading their media and consumer investment sector. Prior to that, he was president and chief operating officer of Random House Inc.

“Erik is a proven international executive with over 15 years of  management experience in the media sector in the U.S. and Europe, including five highly successful years developing our worldwide Elsevier business,” said Habgood. He noted that under Engstrom’s stewardship, sales and profits have grown every year.
