LeftField Media Acquired by Clarion’s Urban Expositions

HIL ANDERSON, SENIOR EDITOR

Norwalk, CT – LeftField Media, an organizer of pop-culture consumer events in the US, was acquired by Urban Expositions, a Clarion Events Company.

Urban Expositions bought out the stakes of three of LeftField’s founders. The fourth co-founder, Greg Topalian, will remain with the company as president and minority owner along with LeftField’s staff.

LeftField was founded in 2014 by Topalian and a trio of top management at Business Journals, Inc (BJI): Britton Jones, Sharon Enright and Mac Brighton. BJI was sold to the British organizer UBM in April. The acquisition will provide LeftField increased capital and infrastructure, while offering Urban Expositions new expertise and market reach in B2C events.

LeftField organizes Awesome Con, a comic and science fiction consumer event in Washington, DC. The firm also runs Audio Expo North America in a partnership with JD Events, and Play Fair, a public event held in conjunction with the annual Toy Fair trade show in New York and organized under a partnership with the Toy Industry Association, Inc.

“LeftField Media has seen incredible growth in less than two years,” Topalian said. “I’m excited now to see what we can do with the resources and confidence of a global event organizer at our back.”

Clarion, one of the largest independent show organizers in England, acquired a majority stake in Urban Expositions in 2015. The Atlanta-based organizer has a portfolio of 35 events in six industry sectors, including the recently launched P3: Progressive Pet Expo and The Classic Car Show.
