Nort Rittmaster, former chairman and CEO of GES in the 1990s, died in California on Dec. 18 after a brief battle with cancer ……. Charlie McCurdy, CEO of Apprise Media, joined the board of 5NET4, organizer of Abilities Expo, to help with brand expansion, acquisitions.  5NET4 is owned by outgoing SISO Executive Director Lew Shomer and  David Korse. Abilities Expo takes place in six U.S. cities.  McCurdy engineered the major acquisitions and eventual sales of GLM and Canon Communications. He also co-founded Primedia, Inc …….

An online course on integrating live entertainment into trade shows will be offered by the University of California, Irvine Extension.  “Entertainment Arts in Events” runs Feb. 9-March 22 and covers contracts, operations and communications. Applications for the 2016 International Buyer Program are being accepted by the Department of Commerce.  Deadline to apply is December 22.  The IBP helps show organizers promote selected shows to overseas attendees and boost U.S. exports.  Details available at www.export.gov/ibp …… Dan Cole was named senior vice president for trade shows and exhibits at Hargrove.  Cole is a former VP of the International CES.  Cole will work with Hargrove’s sales team and account managers.  Hargrove services exhibitions plus corporate and government events …….

CEIR released an update to its report on “How the Exhibit Dollar is Spent.”  Ordering info can be found at wwww.ceir.org.  The report is based on a survey of 641 exhibitors. It includes spending on specific categories and the estimated total spend for 2014 ……. ICUEE 2015 will feature a new co-located conference on utility infrastructure organized by the Associated General Contractors of America.  AGC of America has 25,000 member companies. The conference is expected to  draw additional AGC attendees to the show this Fall ……. IAEE President & CEO David DuBois is the 2015 chairman of the Convention Industry Council (CIC).  Plans to continue building CIC education program.  DuBois’ term began in November.  Bonnie Fedchock, executive director of the National Association for Catering & Events, is new chair elect …….

A trade show for the robotics industry will be launched next year by MecklerMedia Corp.  RoboUniverse debuts May 12-13 at Javits Center.  Richard Erb joined Meckler as executive director of RoboUniverse.  He had been GM of RoboBusiness since 2011 ……. The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) said comedian Jay Leno had cancelled his appearance at the SHOT Show due to political pressure from the gun-control lobby.  Leno was to have performed at the show’s banquet.  Organizers are seeking a replacement who “respects the contributions of our industry.”

Rebecca Jennings was named show manager for dmg events USA’s two ad:tech shows in the U.S.   She had been sales manager for the events.  The U.Sad:tech shows are held in New York and San Francisco. Six other editions take place in London, New Delhi and Asia-Pacific…..
