Bridge Collapse Doesn’t Affect Minneapolis Convention Center

HIL ANDERSON, SENIOR EDITOR

Minneapolis, MN – The dramatic collapse of the 35W bridge in Minneapolis Aug. 1 will likely have no impact on the exhibition industry in the Twin Cities.

Meet Minneapolis said the downtown area was functioning smoothly and the Minneapolis Convention Center is two miles from the bridge.  In addition, several other highways provide access to the convention center. The Minneapolis-Saint Paul Airport is south of Minneapolis and well away from the scene of the calamity.

Tense Moments for CVB Staff

The bridge was, however, very near to the offices of Meet Minneapolis. Greg Ortale, president and CEO of Meet Minneapolis, said there were some anxious moments while accounting for the staff following the rush-hour disaster. “Although we had some near misses, we were blessed that no Meet Minneapolis team members were on the bridge at the time,” Ortale said.

There were no events under way at the center when the bridge collapsed and no exhibitions were scheduled until August 19 when Dub magazine’s Original Automotive Lifestyles Festival Tour rolls into town.

Meet Minneapolis said questions about other future events could be directed to Vice President of Sales Kevin Lewis.
