Bob Johnson Named as GM of New Orleans Convention Center

HIL ANDERSON, SENIOR EDITOR

New Orleans, LA — SMG Vice President of Operations Development Robert L. Johnson has been tapped to become the new president and general manager of the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center – New Orleans.

Johnson, who leaves SMG after 10 years, will also serve as executive vice president of the Ernest N. Morial New Orleans Exhibition Hall Authority. The agency recently placed plans for an expansion on hold in favor of updating the existing Phase I portion of the facility.

“Johnson’s development expertise will be invaluable as we re-purpose Phase I to give New Orleans a distinct competitive advantage in the pursuit of corporate and executive conferences and other corporate business events,” said Authority President Warren Reuther.

Johnson was the general manager of the Louisiana Superdome from 1985 to 1995. During his tenure, he worked on contracts for major events including the Super Bowl and Republican National Committee. His responsibilities at SMG involved pre-opening services for facilities that were in the design or construction phase.

Johnson has spent 34 years in the facility management field. He replaces Jimmie D. Fore, who retired April 1 after 16 years of service.
