Virginia Beach CVB Head Jim Ricketts Passes Away

Virginia Beach, VA – Jim Ricketts has died after a brief illness just days away from his planned retirement as the longtime head of the Virginia Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau.

A memorial service was scheduled for March 26 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center, according to Charles Jeffers, COO of Destination Marketing Association International. “Jim served as Director of the Virginia Beach CVB for nearly 30 years, and was a true leader in the DMO community,” Jeffers said.

Ricketts announced last Fall that he planned to retire on April 1, capping a career with the city that began in 1974. The city announced in early March that Brad Van Dommelen, President of the Traverse City Convention & Visitors Bureau, would replace Ricketts on April 7.

Jeffers was a member of the board of directors of the U.S. Travel Association, and was active in several other industry associations. He also helped oversee the opening of the Virginia Beach Convention Center.
